Orvieto is a charming town situated on tuff cliffs (rocks formed by volcanic explosion). The town is an amazing example of the joined work of nature and man. Velzna, the former name of the city was given to it by the Etruscans, who inherited the place from the Iron Age tribes that resided here. Visitors to the town today will encounter layers of history one on top of the other. Believed to have existed for three millennia, Orvieto is itself a testimonial of the motto inscribed on St. Patrick's well "What nature denied for defence was added by the work of man."
