Transportation
Train
Orvieto is placed on the rail line between Rome and Florence. Fourteen trains arrive every day from both of the cities. The trip from Rome takes an hour and 20 minutes, while the ride from Florence is an hour and 45 minutes. Train connections are also available from Perugia, but you need to change at Terontola for Orvieto. Alternatively, you can use the FCU line to Terni, then transfer to a Rome-bound train and stop in Orte, where you can take the main line. The whole trip is no more than two hours.
The local railway station is situated in the new town of Orvieto Scalo. In order to get to the city you need to take the funicular, situated on the opposite side of the street. This funicular line is the contemporary version of a former cog railway, which operated with hydraulic power in the 1900s. The ticket for the funicular line costs only 80 eurocents, but it is advisable to purchase a combined funicular and bus ticket for the price of 90 eurocents, since it allows you a ride on a minibus to the town afterwards.
Car
Arriving from Todi by car, get on the SS448; that is the shorter one, yet the other one - SS79bis winds through a scenic countryside. Arriving from Perugia, you need to take the SS3bis, which passes Deruta and when you reach Todi switch to the one of the above mentioned. From Chiusi you can get on SS71. If you are using the autostrada A1 between Rome and Florence, look for exit for Orvieto Scalo.
Bus
Bus connections to Orvieto are limited. There is only one bus running daily from Todi. The trip takes around 2 hours, but the route is picturesque indeed. There is one bus running daily from Rome, Triburtina Station.
